Since last April, Facebook and social media sites have been under intense scrutiny over privacy issues with its users.
Here is my report on this hot button issue when it was just beginning:
I get why people are concerned. It's scary for people to realize that some things are not as private as they think. I think it's the creepiest thing when I talk about buying a product with my friends and then that exact product pops up on my Instagram feed.
Yes our phones are listening to us... but I argue, why is that a bad thing?
I like when I have what I need or want right in front of me, it's creepy... but convenient. I love that I do not have to dig through websites to find exactly what I want. I even love when I click on cute booties and then a ton of ads continue to pop up of other cute booties that are similar to what I clicked on.
Yes this may cause me to spend more money on things, but it helps when I am searching for specific things.
This situation is a advertising and marketing dream. Someone needs/wants something and it happens to be right there in front of them. I admit, I have used the creepy data stealing to my advantage and have clicked on those very specific and targeted ads and have bought things directly from those ads.
I say take my data, I have nothing to hide. If an algorithm/listening iPhones can help my shopping process I am all for it. If they learn a little more about me, my age, birthday, who my friends are or what pages I like, so be it. The internet is not new and what you put online is not as private as one might think.
What's your opinion?
-BECKA.
